When did “work/life balance” become the Holy Grail of personal satisfaction and fulfillment – as well as the domain of online coaches?
After all, it doesn’t seem an outrageous concept – work/life balance includes proper prioritizing between “work” (career and ambition) and “lifestyle” (health, pleasure, leisure, family and spiritual development/meditation). Why would finding balance between the two be so difficult for so many?
I believe there is a mindset that has become pervasive in the West, and which has inevitably created dissatisfaction for many: let’s call it the dissonance between who you are vs. what you do. I use the word dissonance deliberately here because, you’ll never find balance between work and life if those two aspects of your self-identity are out […]
In a previous post we examined the concept of confirmation bias; the idea that we seek to reinforce our beliefs whenever they are challenged, rather than accepting a new point of view. Though similar in effect, limiting beliefs come from a different place and are reinforced by different thoughts and experiences.
It goes without saying that life teaches us many lessons, both good and bad. Equally important are the influences of others when we’re young, those we refer to as role models. While the positive lessons we learn from them may become the foundation of confirmation bias, the negative lessons tend toward becoming limiting beliefs.
The Difference Between Bias and Limiting Beliefs
If you’ve been told what an exceptional person you are […]
If you’ve ever played sports, you know what “The Zone” is; that place where everything seems to flow effortlessly from you into the task at hand. The most challenging action seems easy and unconscious, with excellence as the ultimate by-product of your efforts. Exertion is as simple as breathing and the results are nearly always exceptional. The happiness zone is much like this, enabling you to easily find and feel joy daily, if you seek it in all you do.
Of course, if you do know what The Zone is, you also know that it requires training and practice to achieve it with anything like regularity. The happiness zone is no different but, there are steps you can take to help […]
So, you’ve decided it’s time to lose weight and get in shape while at the same time having some fun. Have you thought about cycling for exercise?
Take a moment to consider how you feel when you ride your bike. Cycling is a wonderful way to raise the heart rate, get things done, and see the world from a much more intimate level. No matter which type of bike you choose, cycling will work your entire body. Plus, cycling is fun. You can do it at any time of the day, at almost any time of the year. You may want to wear different types of clothing at different times of the year, but bicycles are durable machines and, when set […]
Dietary trends come and go as quickly as the seasons lately, it seems. Maybe you’ve tried the “paleo diet” or the “raw food”, where you’re told to eat like our ancestors who lived to the ripe old age of 25. Then again, you may have chosen to focus on “gut health” or “brain health” with your latest diet. Heck, maybe the company you work for has built a gym in the office, a hot new trend among corporations – or – in an effort to get you out of the gym, they sign you up to “volunteer” for a “boot camp” fitness program once a year.
Whatever the latest trend may be, it can also be labelled a fad: An interest […]
By the nature of a blog post, financial and investment information must be kept very general, with no specific recommendations investments being made. For both legal and ethical reasons, the percentages below have been gathered as rough estimates and are used for general information purposes only.
Wealth Attraction is the idea that, if you put yourself in the right position, the universe will reward you for your foresight, helping you to acquire wealth with a minimum of effort and stress. Because of my own success, I am a strong believer in real estate investment as a great way to generate passive income. In fact, I believe in this tactic so strongly, I’ve spent the last 20 years teaching others how to […]
Is a Facebook friend a real friend? Does a Twitter follow count as friendship? Has your BFF from college stayed loyal over the years since graduation? Real friendship is not about “Likes” and “Follows”. It’s not about “being there” when it’s convenient to be. A real friendship involves people who are there for each other in good times, and who are supportive in times of need.
They have your back, and you have theirs. They don’t get jealous of your other relationships, and they don’t discard you for a new romance. They don’t envy your success, and they appreciate that you’re happy for theirs. They care enough to honestly tell you when you screw up, and they listen when you warn […]
It goes without saying that, when you set a goal you hope for a certain result. For example, you try to get good grades in high school to make it into a good college. You work hard in college to get a degree that will lead you into a rewarding career. You scrimp and save to gather the cash for a down payment on your first house, and so on. Yet, happiness is different; for happiness as a goal is unattainable for most.
Why would I say this? It goes against everything we’re taught, so it must be wrong.
First, think about this… Being happy is a moral imperative, because being happy around others is a necessary ingredient of growing up and […]
